I'm not at all surprised that the majority feels that traveling to see family for the holidays is a good thing. I am, however, a little surprised that so few people reacted negatively about the stress involved with such trips.
This weekend, I attended my office's holiday party -- at the very lovely Mandarin Oriental. The invitation to the office party indicated that the dress was "festive attire." What do you think that means?
People were wearing tuxes and cocktail dresses. Really, it was insane.
Anyway, this week's poll is about office holiday parties. Vote here.

So I figure you're all about the office party?
Not exactly. I think some drinks and snacks in the office -- or at a restaurant -- to celebrate the season is fine, but spending all that money on a giant shindig in a fancy ballroom is unnecessary.
Pay bonuses, or give it to charity, or do something useful instead.
our company has a pretty big black tie optional gala.
i'm not sure if i'd prefer a bonus (unless it's significant) to the party because it's a fun time to get dressed up and hang out with friends and coworkers that i don't see much anymore now that i'm on client site. also, having worked on different projects in the past, it's a good way to network with those people for possible future work.
so, in my case, i like the company party. they actually moved our party to spring because our company is getting too big to have the same quality bash in the winter (more $$). that and for like, three straight years it snowed, sleeted, or otherwise was icky weather and people didn't show... still haven't heard when it'll be this year.
anyway, i babble. how was your birthday celebration?
Kimmie: I'm not saying that office parties are bad -- I just think there's a point where they get too expensive and extravagant, and then the best use for the money is something else.
The birthday was fun, it's too bad you and Jeromy couldn't come by. I'm hoping to make it out to yours, but I'm a little concerned that I'm going to have a conflict.
I voted "fun", but I think our office parties are quite a bit different than yours. :)
Ours are held at our own expense, and we just wear whatever we wear to work that day for the party. We had a luncheon for our branch yesterday, and coming Thursday is a division-wide party which is basically a meal and a couple games. They're pretty low-key events. :)
My company Christmas party became Christmas meeting. No lie. It was awful. Like your new icon by the way.
RJ: Sounds very different. Mine was very fancy, and not at all low key.
Sweet: Ick. That sounds horrible.
I like to change my icon from time to time. This just seemed like a good choice, considering. Plus, it really does look like me.
