In the trenches

I think I am about 30% packed, and the movers come in six days. In other words, there's much work left to be done.

I am trying to figure out how I managed to keep so much stuff in this apartment. Because I keep bringing things over to the new place -- which is just about twice as big -- and I am starting to be concerned that it's not all going to fit.

Don't get me wrong: I've been able to get rid of some things, and not just the boxes. I already gave my old rollerblades to Goodwill, and I've got a bag of electronics to take over there this weekend. I have a pile of old suits to give to charity. I have a dress and a sock monkey to send to my sister.

In the meantime, I've learned one very important thing: I never ever want to move again.

It's amazing what we humans collect. Simply amazing. Or disturbing. Haven't yet decided which!

Just read your post about being sick and having to sit down in the middle of Ikea. I had to do exactly the same thing just a few months ago. Amongst the bins (trash cans) and lamps, into a fetal position I curled... Hope you're feeling better now!

I said the same thing! Actually, when the movers shoved the last box over the threshold of my new condo, I think I collapsed on my sofa and announced that there was no fucking way in hell I was moving again. It's been three years and, um, I still have some wine flutes wrapped in newspaper print.

budgie: There is no reason why, in a 750 square foot apartment, I ever needed TWO queen-size air mattresses. I also probably don't need all the shoes, clothes, and books, but that's a point that I'm not willing to concede just yet.

PJ: I won't have the couch delivered in time for that. But I will have two beds. And, apparently, two queen size air mattresses.

The moving part sucks, but when you finally get settled, and look around the place with its things in just the right place and everything just so, and you come in one night and are surprised to realize that it feels like home, you realize it is worth it.

No question moving sucks. We still have stacks of boxes in the garage from two or three moves ago. Which only goes to show that unpacking is even worse.

Colleen: I am a long ways away from that.

Mad: I am an excellent unpacker. I hate having things in boxes.

Moving does suck--good luck. When you're done unpacking your boxes, feel free to come up to Ann Arbor and help me finish up with mine. . .
