Trial, Day 16

You know what would totally suck? Having to come back to Newark to finish up the trial in March.

Oh, wait. That's not a joke.

Why would it suck, or why is it not a joke?

Why is it not a joke? I can see why it would suck. Why would you take a break in the middle of a trial?

Not a joke because it's true. I get to come back here on Monday (hopefully for only one day), and then again for closing arguments in mid-March.

We take breaks because the judge tells us we have to. Mostly it's because she has other things scheduled, principally criminal matters -- where the defendants have constitutional rights that need to be protected, such as the right to a speedy trial.

Don't corporations have the right to a speedy trial too? All of their shareholders are held prisoner by the indefinite nature of the trial. It's almost held hostage. I think it's worse than them being in prison, it's like the Hanoi Hilton! Free the money!

Only for criminal matters. There's no right to a speedy trial in a civil matter.
