*Camus' The Stranger -- which inspired The Cure -- would, theoretically, also be a good pick, but (a) I already read it and (b) it's not on the list.

It's the wrong country and not on your list (came out recently), but a great book that I'm reading is "The Places in Between" about a Scotsman walking across all of Afghanistan after 9/11. He's a great narrator and you learn about not just the cities but the villages of rural afghanistan, which make up 90% of the country.
