Dogs are better than cats

I know it's a controversial statement, but let me explain.

When I was younger, I liked cats, but was afraid of dogs. Alas, my dad and I are both allergic to cats, so we never really had one.* Then, we got the dog. And, as time went on, I came to the conclusion that dogs make better pets than cats. Not that I don't think cats make perfectly decent pets, and admittedly, are probably the smarter animal. But they're selfish and aloof. On the other hand, dogs are loyal, trustworthy, friendly -- and usually funnier.

Plus, they can save your life.

Toby, a 2-year-old golden retriever, saw his owner choking on a piece of fruit and began jumping up and down on the woman's chest. The dog's owner believes the dog was trying to perform the Heimlich maneuver and saved her life.

A cat, on the other hand, would probably sit there and watch as you choked to death, silently mocking you.

* When my sister volunteered at the humane society, she brought a kitten home to foster for a while.

I do love my dog and could be considered obssessed with her - but I am pretty sure she would just sit there too.

Cats rule.

See, when you're taking your dog out at 3am in the freezing rain, my cat is potty trained, and that right there, is all the evidence for the feline dominance of the pet world.

Oh, and plus? Cats save people too.

Why are people so bitter about cats? I loved my cat to death even though I was terribly allergic to her. She was both very independent and extremely affectionate. And she could take care of herself.

e.b.: When I was home for Thanksgiving and I was really sick, my dog opened the bedroom door, poked around at me with his nose, and then went off to find my dad and started crying. My dad was annoyed, but I knew that he was trying to tell my dad that something was wrong with me.

Still, it's no heimlich.

Scarlet: I don't hate cats. From time to time, I've even considered having one, since they're definitely better apartment dwellers.

malnurtured snay: I did admit that cats are smarter. Cleaner, too. Still, there's something about them that gives me the impression that they only tolerate us because we feed them, clean the litter box, and pet them/play with them at their convenience.

When I was in law school, I had a dog that loved us so much that she had separation anxiety.

DSL: Again, I don't hate cats. I just think they don't love us quite as much as we love them.

D, I think your dog from law school had more than "separation anxiety," what with the tearing up the doors and walls of the apartment. She was sweet, but seriously needed some valium.

Hailee was a puppy. Puppies destroy things -- including Soul Asylum CDs.

And the "separation anxiety" was diagnosed by her vet.

But I think my point was that Hailee totally loved us, enough that she would freak out when we left her alone. I mean, she even loved Chanin's boyfriend after he kicked her in the head. You don't get that kind of attachment from cats.
