Ferris Bueller, you're my hero.

My hotel, which is nothing spectacular, has a spectacular view of the Chicago River. And many of the bridges over the river are quite picturesque.

More significantly, even though I brought a winter coat to Chicago, it turned out to be an unnecessary measure. It was in the 60's today, which was perfectly lovely.

As a result, I was wishing that I didn't have to work. It would have been great to just roam around downtown and go to museums. Heck, I wish it was still baseball season -- I'd have gladly spent the day cheering on the Cubs.

It would have been like my very own version of Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

To complete Ferris Bueller's Day Off, you'd have to steal your friend's dad's Ferrari in the suburbs, pick up your girlfriend at school, go to the Chicago Board of Trade, go to the Art Institute, have lunch at a nice restaraunt, and become the star of a parade.

After you do all the above (which would be impossible in a day even without Chicago traffic) you'd have to return your friend's car, watch it get totalled and run home before your parents get home. All before sunset.

Justin: The only person I know with an antique Ferrari is in San Francisco. (His car is in New York or New Jersey, though.) And, besides, my office would be pretty pissed if they paid for me to go up there and I played hooky for an entire day. So instead, in an homage, my brother and I drove from the Merchandise Mart to the South Side by U.S. Cellular Field and then back up to the North Side via Lakeshore Drive for no good reason.

Scarlet: Me too. I think the only movies I've seen more often are Real Genius and Top Gun. But that's because my roommate in college was obsessed with Val Kilmer.

Yeah, it certainly is too bad about baseball season. I made it Chicago over the summer for Lollapalooza and managed to hit up Wrigley Field for the first time in my life. What an experience that was. A necessary pilgrimage for any baseball fan.

And Ferris Bueller's day off: One of the most joyful movies ever made. I'm not sure it's the best, the funniest, or the coolest, but I always find it exhilarating. There aren't many films that capture youthful exuberance quite like that one, and all told I've probably seen it more times than a majority of the films with which I am familiar...

You're right. There's pretty much no good reason to drive to anywhere near U.S. Cellular Field. Even during baseball season it's barely worth it.
