Musings on babies, quarterbacks, and supermodels

I don't know why, but I'm completely captivated by the whole Bridget Moynahan-Tom Brady story. The breakup, the pregnancy, the supermodel, the accusations, and the Catholicism -- but now, mostly, the war of the publicists.

This has all the makings of a great movie. Let's see: You have a Superbowl winning conservative Catholic (and Republican) star quarterback, his older, pregnant, C-list actress ex-girlfriend (whose most recent career move was a bad TV show that mysteriously disappeared off the fall schedule), and the 10-years-younger supermodel.

Then again, the story would be way better if one of them killed the others.* I should start writing the screenplay now.

In all seriousness, though, I officially agree with Salon:

What I do have an issue with is that the editorial judges Moynahan for being pregnant with a man she had a three-year relationship with, while not questioning or judging Brady for frolicking around Europe with a lingerie model on his arm while his pregnant ex announces their upcoming child to the press. There's nothing inherently wrong with heading to Paris with Gisele Bündchen -- I know plenty of people who would welcome that opportunity. I'm just tired of insinuations that if a couple conceives and then breaks up, the woman must have been using her uterus to try to keep her man.

*Disclaimer: I am not advocating murder. I'm just saying that vengeful pregnant ex-girlfriends killing supermodels makes a good story.

Ugh, yeah, that's wack.

God and this is why I love Hollywood, that and Anna Nicole and Britney.

I disagree. I think she raped him. She must have. Conservative Catholic, my ass. And by the way, I am an advocate of justified murder.

Scarlet: I hope by "wack" you are referring to all of the comments and insinuations that Bridget is so desperate to keep Tom that she got knocked up.

e.b.: This particular story is not Hollywood -- it's Massachusetts. But yeah, I see your point. And right now, it's a little lighter than the death/drugs/rehab/lawyers/child custody issues present in the Britney and Anna Nicole stories.

dsl: Tom Brady is a man-whore, and we should all be questioning his Republican and Catholic credentials.

DSL said...

Manwhore indeed. I hate hypocrites.

DSL: I think my hatred of hypocricy is why I love this story. I can't wait 'till some tabloid reports that the supposedly conservative Catholic quarterback tried to pressure his ex to not have the baby. (How ignominious!)

DSL said...

Wow, I didn't even think about that possibility.

DSL said...

Well, now it's been reported that he's excited about the baby. The saga continues.

Why are you questioning his Republican credentials? Oh right, his "affair" was not with another man. ;)

And you say we Reps don't have a sense of humor :)

DSL: I think his hand was forced. To not say he was excited about the baby would make him look like the bad guy.

Bo: Over the past several election cycles, Tom Brady has campaigned for conservative/Republican candidates -- most of whom were running on a strict moral/religious "family values" type platform. The fact that his behavior doesn't adhere to such values smacks of hypocricy.

As I've said before -- on the blog and to you in person -- I can understand being a conservative and having strict moral/religious values, even when I don't necessarily share those exact values. What I can't abide is hypocricy, i.e. claiming to have those values and living in a completely contradictory way.

Yep, that's a standard statement. That and "the couple will remain good friends."

Dara, my attempt at humor must have failed . . . maybe if I had phrased it this way "Just because his affair isn't with a gay man how dare you question his republican credentials. :)"

If you want me to go back to old debating Bo then I will . . . I have a big old essay I can have you and Debby critique! :)

In seriousness, I actually agree with you all for the most part on this one if what you all say is true. I know nothing about Brady's politics/religion etc. I do think this story is kind of silly, but we are America and we love stuff like this!

dara said...

Bo: Sorry to misinterpret. The joke is, however, funnier the second way.

And again, I don't mind the debating. This blog definitely needs someone to point out my knee-jerk liberal and Christian-bashing tendencies.

DSL said...

Yeah, I almost told Dara that she missed Bo's joke, but I figured we can't interrupt Dara when she's on a roll. :-) Silly story indeed, but I love the combat. ;-)

No sweat Dara. I just try to make sure to remind people that Christians, like everyone else, comes in people easy to dislike and nice people, and that Christianity does not have the monopoly on hypocrisy and issues. Every group has their bad apples - I guess I am an equal opportunity satirist.

I have the same knee-jerk reactions you do some times, I just don't have an active blog to vent my initial frustrations!

I don't think Catholicism was being proposed as a/the cause of hypocrisy. Sometimes people use religion (whichever religion) for their personal interests. I don't think that's a surprise. They are the ones making a mockery of it. Okay, end of sermon.
