Two-movie day

I saw two movies today -- Lady In the Water and Crash (on DVD).

To me, Crash was ok, but nothing spectacular. I'm probably going to offend people by writing this but, in my personal opinion, Brokeback Mountain, Capote, and Good Night and Good Luck were all better -- more groundbreaking -- films, and therefore any one of them was probably more deserving of best picture. I know that there is a purpose to having all of the related stories going on at once -- like Magnolia, Lone Star, or Short Cuts and their ilk -- but sometimes so many characters and plotlines detracts from the story and, ultimately, the point.

Lady in the Water was a disaster. And I really, really wanted to like it. I loved The Sixth Sense, and I think Unbreakable is one of the most underrated movies. I even liked The Village. This was just an unintelligable mess.

Certainly no offense here ... your list of the movies better than Crash in 2005 could easily grow to 20 or more movies .. to me, it was basically two hours of "Can't we all just get along"?

I completely agreee about Lady In The Water. A total mess.

I think you're in the majority on Crash, though I thought it was a better flick than Good Night. I really liked Capote too, but I never saw Broke Back, probably never will -- I'm not really into "westerns." Heh.

I agree with you that all three of those movies were better than Crash. And I haven't seen Munich, but there's a good chance Crash was the worst movie nominated for best picture this year.

While I agree that Crash didn't deserve to win best picture of the year, I certainly don't think it was a bad movie. I found it to be a very moving experience in the full theater, something highly unusual for me.

I'm not saying Crash was bad -- I thought it was quite good. It's just that I think that three of the other nominees for Best Picture were vastly superior. And, like Justin, I haven't seen Munich yet.

My only conclusion is that the vote was really close because all of the movies were good.
